A range of Hair extension tools and accessories will help you insert and fix your own hair extensions at home, without needing to head down to the salon. A small investment in the long term will save many hundreds of dollars in the long run, and will enable you to change your hairstyle at home with minimum fuss, and to give your friends a make over.

There are many clip on extensions to choose from and these are the easiest to use and attach at home. They offer a temporary change of style which is easily created and quickly removed and if used properly, will not damage your own hair, and will not require expensive hair extension tools. In the salon, and the best option for a home hairdressing service, is to use glue to fix the extensions in place. The glue forms a stronger bond, and will not allow the extensions to slip.

For gluing, the use of a small glue gun is ideal. The gun heats the glue to melting point, and helps keep mess to a minimum. Glue can be applied to the base of the extensions and then held in place until the glue sets. Heated glue pots are also useful, with the ends of the extensions dipped into the glue giving a uniform coating to maximize adhesion.

Hair fusing tongs and hair connectors are mains powered devices similar in size to straightening rods and curling tongs. They both use heat to fuse synthetic hairs and create a strong bond. Whilst more expensive, they offer a much cleaner method for attaching extensions, and make a strong bond with your own hair, although have the highest potential for hair damage.

One of the tried, tested, and versatile methods of adding hair extensions is by using the bead method.  Beads are attached to existing hair at the root near to the scalp. These are then crimped into place, and hair extensions woven into the beads. When the extensions need to be removed, the beads can be opened, and both the bead and extensions can be easily slid off the hair. Pliers should be used for crimping the beads, and pulling needles to put the extensions in place on the beads. The beads can be cheaply purchased from all hair extension outlets and many online stores.

Attaching extensions to the base of the hairs provide the least potential for damage, and gives strong, long lasting extensions. This method cannot be used very effectively for attaching your own extensions, as it is not possible to see what you are doing.

Once the extensions are in place, normal styling tools can be used to straighten and curl as you would with your own hair, to blend in and to create the perfect hairstyle.
